Abysses are interactable objects in Path of Exile that create cracks and pits, spawning monsters. They can appear from Act 6 onwards and are considered Extra Content, with a baseline chance of over 8% to appear in any map area.
What is an Abyss?
Abysses are interactive challenges you’ll encounter from Act 6 onwards, marked by a green icon on your minimap. Stepping on one triggers a series of events:
Abysses begin appearing in Act 6 and continue to appear in maps. They are marked on the minimap with a green icon. When a player walks over an Abyss, a crack forms on the ground, releasing a small number of monsters. As the player follows the crack, it expands, eventually creating a pit that spawns more monsters, including rare ones.
If the player takes too long to reach the pit or defeat the monsters, the pit will close. However, if the player is quick enough, another crack will form leading to another pit. An Abyss can create between one and four pits. Since cracks cannot cross themselves or each other, an Abyss may end prematurely if it reaches a corner.
Clearing the final pit spawns an Abyssal Trove, which can be opened for loot. The Abyssal Trove always contains at least one Abyss jewel and sometimes more. Occasionally, a Stygian Spire monster will spawn instead of the Abyssal Trove, dropping a Stygian Vise along with other loot.
In areas with zone levels 78 and higher, Abysses with four pits might open an entrance to the Abyssal Depths, where players can encounter an Abyssal Lich.
Abyss Jewels
Abyss jewels function similarly to regular jewels but offer different types of bonuses. Most mods on Abyss jewels have tiers that depend on the item level. These jewels can be socketed in the passive skill tree’s jewel slots or in items with an abyssal socket, such as a Stygian Vise and unique Abyss items.
Stygian Vise
The Stygian Vise is a belt with an abyssal socket as an implicit modifier, allowing it to equip Abyss jewels. Stygian Vises drop from Stygian Spires and Abyssal Liches.
Abyssal Depths
The Abyssal Depths is a side zone that can spawn in Abysses in areas with zone levels 78 and higher. This zone contains Abyss monsters and features a boss encounter with an Abyssal Lich, which can drop Abyss-themed unique items.
