In the ever-evolving world of Wraeclast, the latest expansion for Path of Exile, "Settlers of Kalguur," introduces an exciting new challenge league where players are tasked with constructing a vibrant city amidst the harsh and cursed landscape. This expansion, set to launch on July 26th, brings a blend of city-building mechanics, resource management, and real-time gameplay, offering a fresh and innovative experience for both new and veteran Exiles.

Welcome to Kingsmarch

At the heart of this league is the ambitious project of building Kingsmarch, a new city intended to become the hub of commerce between Wraeclast and the distant land of Kalguur. Players will meet Johan, the King's Hand, in Lioneye's Watch, who is recruiting workers, traders, and Exiles to help establish this new settlement. Starting as a modest tavern in a field, Kingsmarch will grow and evolve through the efforts of the players.

Gathering Resources

Building a city from scratch is no small feat, and players will need to gather various resources to aid in construction. On their adventures, they will encounter several types of minerals:

  • Crimson Iron: Veins of Iron overrun with corruption, spawning dangerous foes.
  • Orichalcum: Guarded by demons, this mineral requires liberation from its worshippers.
  • Petrified Amber: Attracts mindless Blighted Enemies.
  • Bismuth: Causes areas to become unstable due to its strong elemental affinity.
  • Verisium: A highly valuable and dangerous material guarded by powerful foes.

Once these resources are tagged, miners will be set to work retrieving them, adding a real-time element to the game as these tasks continue whether the player is logged in or not.

Building the Town

With resources in hand, players can begin to construct and upgrade various structures within Kingsmarch:

  • Tavern: The central hub of the town, improving recruiter prospects and providing a place for important NPCs to gather.
  • Mining Station: Enhances the efficiency of miners and allows for better resource collection.
  • Smelter: Converts raw ore into valuable bars for further use.
  • Disenchanter: Breaks down Magic, Rare, or Unique items into Thaumaturgic Dust for crafting and shipping.
  • Farming: Grows and harvests crops to support the town's needs.

These upgrades are crucial for the growth and prosperity of Kingsmarch, turning it from a humble settlement into a bustling city.

The Rewards of Building

As Kingsmarch develops, players will unlock various rewards. One significant aspect is the ability to establish shipping routes for trade, where acquired resources can be sent to different Kalguuran and Karui ports. Each port offers specific rewards based on the resources shipped, providing incentives to manage trade efficiently and protect shipments from dangers such as monsters, pirates, and environmental hazards.

Crafting and Technology

The expansion also introduces new crafting systems:

  • Runesmithing Table: Allows Dannig to engrave runic magic onto weapons, providing powerful enchantments.
  • Recombination: Isla's system to combine two items, hoping to merge the best modifiers onto a single item.
  • Currency Trade-Market: Facilitated by Faustus, this system allows asynchronous trading of currency and other stackable items, reducing the hassle of direct player-to-player trades.

Challenges and Bosses

Kingsmarch's growth will attract attention, both positive and negative. Players will face endgame bosses like Sasan, the Bandit Lord, who may ransom workers or entire ships. These bosses provide unique challenges and drop new unique items, adding an extra layer of excitement to the league.

Balance Changes and Quality of Life Improvements

The Settlers of Kalguur expansion brings significant balance changes, particularly to melee skills, and introduces new Ascendancy Classes such as The Warden. Quality of Life improvements include automatic waypoint activation, static life bars for some bosses, and simplified Harvest encounters.

Conclusion

Path of Exile: Settlers of Kalguur offers an immersive and dynamic experience, combining the thrill of combat and exploration with the strategic depth of city-building. As players work to construct and defend Kingsmarch, they'll uncover new challenges and rewards, making this expansion a must-play for all Exiles. Prepare to embark on this ambitious journey and see if you can help build the greatest city Wraeclast has ever seen.
