PoE Necromantic Aegis — Path of Exile

Necromantic Aegis is a keystone passive skill in Path of Exile that transfers all bonuses provided by modifiers on an equipped shield from the player character to their minions. This keystone is particularly useful for summoner builds that rely on empowering their minions with additional defenses, resistances, or other shield-related stats.

Mechanics

Transfer of Shield Bonuses: When Necromantic Aegis is allocated, the player character no longer benefits from any of the modifiers on their equipped shield. Instead, all these modifiers are applied to the minions. This includes:

  • Implicit Modifiers: Such as flat defenses (e.g., armour, evasion, or energy shield) or elemental resistances.
  • Explicit Modifiers: These can include increased life, block chance, added damage, resistances, and other beneficial effects that shields can roll.
  • Local Defenses: Any defenses that the shield would normally provide to the player are given to the minions instead.

Character Considered as Holding a Shield: Despite the shield’s modifiers being transferred to minions, the player character is still considered to be holding a shield. This means:

  • Movement Speed Penalty: The character will still suffer from the hidden movement speed penalty that is inherent to the shield’s base type.
  • Certain Skill Interactions: Skills like Tempest Shield, which require a shield, will still apply their effects to the character.

Passive Skills Interactions:

  • Shield-Related Passives: Any passive skills that increase the stats provided by shields (e.g., “% increased Energy Shield from Equipped Shield”) will have no effect on the player character since the shield’s stats are applied to minions.
  • Shield-Holding Passives: Passives that provide bonuses while holding a shield (e.g., elemental resistances from Sanctuary) will still benefit the player character as they are technically still holding a shield.

Effectiveness of Shield Bonuses:

  • Increased Rarity and Quantity: Any bonuses to item rarity or quantity found on the shield will be rendered useless when applied to minions, as these bonuses only affect the player character.
  • Gems and Abyssal Jewels: Gems and jewels socketed in the shield remain usable and retain their effects on the player. Minions do not inherit socketed gems or their effects from the shield.

Crucible Passives:

  • Most Crucible Passives work with Necromantic Aegis, benefiting the minions. However, Crucible Passives that allocate notable passive skills will not have any effect, as minions do not have access to the player’s passive tree.

Build Considerations

Necromantic Aegis is ideal for summoner builds that want to maximize the defenses or other shield-based bonuses of their minions. By allocating this keystone, summoners can significantly boost the survivability or damage of their minions, depending on the shield used. For example, a shield with high energy shield and resistances can make minions much tankier, while a shield with added elemental damage can increase their offensive capabilities.

However, it’s important to consider the loss of these bonuses for the player character. This keystone is generally not recommended for players who rely heavily on their shield for personal defense or block chance.

Summary

  • Transfers Shield Bonuses: Necromantic Aegis transfers all shield bonuses from the player character to their minions.
  • Player Still Holds Shield: The player is still considered to be holding a shield, affecting movement speed and skill interactions.
  • Shield Passives: Passive skills that enhance shield stats will no longer benefit the player but may still apply if related to holding a shield.
  • Best for Summoners: This keystone is most effective in summoner builds that want to enhance their minions’ survivability or damage output.

Necromantic Aegis offers a unique way to empower minions by sacrificing the player’s own defensive capabilities in favor of bolstering their minions, making it a cornerstone for many summoner-oriented builds in Path of Exile.
