The Visualised Sophistication 北歐傢俬看得見的講究
只要一件家品外型簡潔直觀,人們都會將其形容為「北歐風」。所謂「北歐」遠多於此,設計世界豐富多端,由受包浩斯影響而主導的極簡線條色彩及機能主義,中世紀華麗鮮豔的色彩及大膽的形態,至近年強調自然的取材及趨向圓潤的線條,其中厚實及富建築形態的設計亦逐漸浮現。
近年推出/生產的設計大多分為幾類:曾被忽視或未曾被實現的設計重新製作、老字號品牌與生於這個時代的設計師合作研發屬於這個時代的經典、給現有的經典系列賦予嶄新的傳譯,等。而大眾也似乎開始接觸因戰後工業量產而沒落的木工坊,手作及工藝的那份實誠望得以傳承。

As far as a piece of furniture goes in a minimalistic, simple and straightforward form, people regard the pieces as Scandinavian design. In reality, bold and sculptural designs dramatically increase in the world of Scandinavian designs, especially the works from the designers and architects who were trained as cabinetmakers.
Supposingly, cabinetmakers were almost gone a few decades ago due to industrialisation and large scale of productions. When the world of design was getting further on the way of organic shape and sustainable designs, it seems to us that people are getting more noticed of the importance and craftsmanship of cabinetmakers based on their honesty from within.
Speaking of the latest trends, there are a few common type of designs: (1) production and remake the Archival Classic, (2) collaboration of long-established brands and modern artists to create Today’s Classic, as well as (3) extension of Existing Collection; Where Gubi goes with all of the above mentioned types in this season.

A playful horseshoe, the iconic French breakfast pastry - Croissant Lounge Chair/ Sofa was created in 1962 with a slightly downwards tilt that piped in leather or fabric stitches. The idea came from Wikkelsø’s sense of humor and hard work under Kaare Klint’s guidance. Wikkelsø used to mount a sail at the back of his snail-like bike for a faster walk when he was small. Thanks to his study under the master of modern Danish designs, the sturdiness of Croissant was piped with confident craftsmanship in a bold and contemporary form. Comfort at all angles, the visualised sense of peaceful.
一張乘涼的椅子在珍藏的珠寶手稿中發現。想像著20世紀竹藤的全盛時期,丹麥職人輕易的彎曲竹藤編織的畫面,現在交由印尼匠人傳承的工藝;也是Tove Kindt-Larsen的習慣 - 在丹麥北部的白沙灘所撿起的石卵浮木,一種自然而成的意象。
Grace Lounge Chair was discovered from an archived pile of Tove Kindt-Larsen’s jewelry sketches in 1936. Danish Reed Guild mastered rattan in the 20th century, when Danish craftsmen easily bent and bound rattan into long loops. However, the hand-woven skills no longer found in Denmark and are now performed by the Indonesian artisans. The chair for warmer days, the imagery of nature probably comes from her habit - spending hours for pebbles and driftwood at the white-sand beach from the northern coast of Denmark.
木工職人Mathias Steen Rasmussen仿效黃金時期的設計大師,為這張日常冥想時使用的椅子命名 - MR01 Initial Chair。形態看似懸空的座位由90米繩索綁緊,入榫結合的橫豎紋理,繩索木材交錯的座椅需要碰觸才感受到的其中真實。冥想帶來的靈感,是現代人尋找的放鬆平靜。
MR01 Initial Chair is named like the classics from the design masters, which is also the debut showmanship of woodworker Mathias Steen Rasmussen for daily meditation. The floating form is hand-woven by a piece of 90 meter natural cord and wedged with mortise and tenon joints. The rope and directions of wood grains are fully utilised to correlate the virtualness and reality. The sort of comfort and support cannot be easily realised until a touch. An idea from meditation, the type of modern calmness that people dreamt of.
Epic Coffee/ Dining Table系列的圓形六邊形是來自古羅馬建築及希臘石柱的古雅形態。初版以溫泉沉積的Travertine復興,再版以生鏽的鋼鐵形象化時間的集積,色澤應光線的折射延續初版的溫度,是意大利工匠反覆塗抹特意顯現的自然沉澱。
The circle and hexagon of Epic Coffee/ Dining Table Collection well-expressed the arche form of Greek columns and Roman architecture. The sort of renaissance comes from sediment of thermal spring that Travertine comes as first. The patinated Steel version comes next, which Italian artisans spend days and weeks to repeat the application of layering resulting in a sense of natural procession. Under dynamic light sources, warm hot springs and cold steel walk on the same colourway over the versions to form the continuation.
曾經在訪問會議中被問及「北歐傢俬會有和式元素感覺嗎?」
當時剛入行略知皮毛,只知道某些品牌一直有在跟日本項目跟交流,便以為一屋木材竹藤便是坊間所指的日系,無法說些什麼得體的話語。
現在稱不上深入了解,但北歐傢俬比想像中來得深沉講究卻也簡單易懂:外形觸感、手工心意、物料運用,就像日本的「侘寂」:意識形態、自然意象、到物體的本質,也是一門值得好好深讀的課題。
北歐品牌的傢俬,設計師及生產地來自世界各地,更多在於材質管理及無法量化的背後心意;所以究竟是北歐還是日系美學,在乎如何配合使用空間,來理解這件傢俬,交由你決定。
One being asked, “Does Scandinavian aesthetics come with Japanese elements?”
“Some brands do have regular projects and close with Japanese designers.” The newbie could only answer, who once regarded furniture made of rattan or wood meant “Japanese style”.
Gradually, Scandinavian aesthetics comes much more sophisticated and complicated yet simple over the years: form and texture, craftsmanship and gratitude, selection and management of material source; which also goes with the Japanese concept “Wabi-Sabi” as form and ideology, mother nature and imagery, nature of object; both of the aesthetics comes much more than a master degree to investigate.
