The State of Stillness I 一室恬靜

Some may say, “sofa is the centerpiece of a home instead of a dining table.” Back to the core of contemporary interior, humans are designed to face-to-face interaction in the dining area, while mostly likely to focus and face the television in the living zones.

A wooden dining table makes a stronger spell in dragging people into the dining area than that of a marble or glass table. So as a round table rather than a rectangular one, in terms of the natural warmth of wood, soft and raw. Speaking of wood, Artek from Finland, Carl Hansen & Son from Denmark and Skagerak from the middle of Denmark and Sweden are highlighted with their professional craftsmanship and literally one of the best wooden cabinet makers in the world.

Based on the sense of silence and calm in local sources, Finnish designs stay pure and be true to the material, which is completely another story of the sleek and minimal designs from Denmark. Aalto’s Table and Chair collection blooms functionality from the natural blond pale ground. The concept of versatility is retained with standard components - only 3 screws are required on each bended leg, yet works pretty well decades later as if at the beginning.

The ground-breaking “little sister of the architectural column” stands the traditional furniture production since the 1920s. Wood is sourced from Finland local sustainable forest and firstly bended as a comb-shape before gluing veneer strips to make the bending process easier. Birch lamella are then dried in shade to prevent tanning under strong sunbeams.

For all sorts of occasions, the L-legs technique enables more than 50 creations over the years. Aalto mastered the L-Legs skills in 1933, later widely used in his furnishing, interior design and architecture in the name of hardwearing designs, which is also known as the father of classic Finnish design. Take the very first side table and stools as an example, Stool 60 is one of the must-have national designs in almost every Scandinavian homes since the last century.

No doubt the world can’t get enough of the artistic innovation and designer classics from Scandinavia. In the era of cabinetmakers, Scandinavian designs were born for specific occasions, like exhibitions and showcases, hotels and restaurants.

One of the most prominent contributors of Danish Modern, also a friend of Hans. J Wegner, Børge Mogensen designed Hunting Table and Huntsman Chair based on the concept “Hunting Cabin” for the Guild’s exhibition. Graduated from cabinet maker training, robustness of craftsmanship is highlighted by the details of contrasting wood, leather and stainless steel/ brass on the ground of functionalism.

The symmetric Hunting Table goes slightly narrow across the top with rounded corners and edges. Diagonal metal bars connect the table top with frame and legs made by mortise and tenon joints. Every little thing goes in harmony with the waistcoat-like Huntsman Chair and belted for future possibilities.
